Hell's Angels Vest
1960s
"The enclosed Hell's Angels vest--about 1960's--is for the Smithsonian"
So opened the letter that accompanied this denim sleeveless jacket mailed--without return address--to the Smithsonian in 1989. According to the letter, the vest was worn by "Hairy" Henry of San Francisco, CA. The patch in the upper left-hand corner of the jacket identifies the wearer as a 1%er. "A 1%er," states one Hell's Angels publication, "is the one (1%) of a hundred of us who have given up on society. And the politicians' One Way Law. This is why we look repulsive. We are saying we don't want to be like you or look like you. 'So stay out of our face.'"
