Church Tower Clock, Cambridge, Massachusetts
1832
Wheels within wheels
Simon Willard of Boston, MA, built this tower clock in 1832, when he was 79 years old. It was designed to be wound once a week and to strike the hours on a single bell. Large cast weights provided power. For many years it kept faithful time at the First Parish, in Harvard Square, Cambridge.
