Convention Cheese-Head Hat
1996
"My kids could pick me out of the crowd"
Patricia Hawley, a delegate from the dairy state of Wisconsin, wore this triangular-shaped headwear resembling a wedge of Swiss cheese to the 1996 Democratic convention in Chicago. Since the use of mobile television cameras in the 1970s, delegates have increasingly dressed up to attract media attention. "I wanted to decorate something," recalled the hat-wearing delegate from Sevastopol, WI, "so that if the television cameras panned the hall my kids could pick me out of the crowd. It was a way to say, 'Hey, kids, here I am!'"
