The inscription along the lip of the jar shows that Drake was able to read and write, skills often forbidden among slaves.

Stoneware Jar
1862

"I made this jar all of cross/If you dont repent, you will be lost"
These words were inscribed across the top of this alkaline-glazed stoneware jar by its maker, David Drake, a slave at Lewis Miles Plantation Pottery in South Carolina's Edgefield District. Drake's two-line poems--about religion, love, and life--proclaimed his ability to read and write, skills that were often forbidden among slaves.
