Solar System Quilt
1876
Out-of-this-world teaching tool
Ellen Harding Baker of Cedar County, IA, made this appliqued and embroidered wool quilt in 1876. The design on the quilt resembles solar systems illustrated in astronomy books of the time. Baker, like many women of the 1800s, pursued an interest in astronomy. She used her quilt as a visual aid in a series of astronomy lectures in the Iowa towns of West Branch, Moscow, and Lone Tree.
