American Women Photographers
1890s
"Woman in kimono" by Eva Watson-Schutze
Washington, DC, photographer Frances B. Johnston collected prints such as this one by the country's female photographers to display at the 1900 Paris Salon. The artists represented included some of the most successful professional and amateur American women photographers at the turn of the century. Sometime after the salon, Johnston donated about 60 of these images to the Smithsonian Institution.
