Portrait of Walt Whitman
1890s
By George Collins Cox
This portrait of American poet Walt Whitman is part of the Smithsonian's George Collins Cox Collection, approximately 1,300 photographs representing the work of late 19th-century portrait photographer George Collins Cox of New York City. Some of the images in the Cox collection represent work he performed while assisting the respected sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens. These portraits then became the basis for St. Gaudens' bronzes, statues and sculptures.
