A Suit for Him, A Suit for Her
1944
What to wear in 1944
This man's navy blue, pinstripe, two-piece suit is typical of the business attire of the 1940s. The woman's navy blue gabardine--an Adrian business attire design purchased at Garfinckel's department store in Washington, DC--was actually worn as a wedding suit. Government regulations designed to conserve textiles, clothing, and leather during World War II had made it impossible to get the fabric necessary to make a traditional white wedding dress.
