Gold Nugget Watch and Chain
1870-85

Striking gold in the West
This watch-and-chain set is encrusted with gold nuggets and set with four rubies and a diamond. It was made for Anson Williber Callen, a Junction City, KS-guide for expeditions going to Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada in search of gold. For payment, Callen received an interest in each mine located. The gold nuggets on this watch and chain are believed to have come from one of the mines that he helped discover.
